Calling Bristol Map-makers, Illustrators, Creatives

Bristol Commons is looking to commission an illustrator to create a map of Bristol that can expand public understanding of the commons and commoning.

By commons we mean a living social system through which a community organises, manages and shares together over time. (Learn more about the commons here.)

The map will have different  purposes and audiences. For lots of people it might be the first time they’ve heard of the Bristol Commons, so it needs to act as a bit of an introduction to the movement and enliven the idea of commoning in our city. The map will show the breadth and variety of commons within Bristol, it will offer a springboard for getting involved with projects, and be a small step towards encouraging a culture of shared governance within our city.

This proposed artwork will be very much an initial version, with the intention of provoking engagement and visualisation to ask,“What’s missing from this map?”. The hope is to spark further conversations  around mapping the commons. But this initial incarnation of the map will also stand alone as a piece of work – to acknowledge the commons among us.

The illustrator will work with people from the Bristol Commons movement to understand and develop the requirements, and visual language of the map. They will then develop the full map, with some steps for feedback and iteration.
